The Visionary Behind Domaine Belargus
Ivan Massonnat is the driving force behind Domaine Belargus, a passionate wine lover turned vigneron who left a successful career in finance to pursue his dream of redefining Chenin Blanc in the Loire Valley. In 2018, he acquired and united some of the region’s most exceptional terroirs—many of them previously farmed by Loire legend Jo Pithon—into a single, biodynamic estate.
Massonnat’s vision is radical yet rooted in tradition: to vinify each parcel of Chenin Blanc as a standalone expression, much like the climats of Burgundy. His approach is uncompromising—biodynamic farming, native fermentations, minimal intervention, and long aging—resulting in wines of purity, precision, and profound terroir character.
Under his stewardship, Belargus has quickly become one of the most exciting domaines in France, producing dry and sweet Chenin Blancs that rival the world’s greatest white wines in complexity, energy, and age-worthiness.
